Don’t forget — this Sunday is Mother’s Day. Although the day reeks of commercialism and is occasionally maligned as “just another Hallmark holiday,” there’s something to be said for thinking of your mother with fond appreciation.
After all, she fed you, cleaned you up, and put up with your tantrums. She allowed you to discover the error of your ways when you would stubbornly eat nothing but chocolate pudding for weeks on end. She encouraged you wholeheartedly, listened to your woes compassionately, and was a source of unconditional love, sometimes at great cost to herself. I am happy to say that I am one of the lucky ones, to have such a mother.
But some of you no longer have a mother on this earth to love, and some of you sadly had to deal with absent or abusive mothers, but were able to rise above with the encouragement of an adoptive mother or grandmother, or caring aunt or sister. It matters not, for these nurturing women earned the title of “Mother” when they gave you the gift of their loving, supportive female energy. That's a lot to be thankful for.
So take some time out this weekend to remember your Mother — whether you were chosen by her or born to her — with appreciation and gratitude. I know I will.
